We are still cleaning areas of our new 1974 36 classic and have a question regarding some lead bars in our bilge. I have 6- 22"x4"x3 1/2" bars located between our engines. I am wondering of they might have been added as trim to counter act the weight of our dinghy. The dingy is a Avon 3.40 RIB with a 25 hp 4 stroke Yamaha and console steering. I am looking to install a larger holding tank in this area and wondered if others have ballast like this on their bilge.

If it is to trim our boat I will most likely move it forward some and look to reduce the hp on the dinghy setup or replace it with something much lighter.

Any thoughts?

They are most likely ballast to trim the boat as needed. Most lead bars as you describe have a tab with a hole on each end to secure if needed.

Thanks Bob. No holes in the ends but they do have tabs. I suspect it was for the added weight of the dingy to help trim the boat.

We have sold our Avon RIB and the SeaWise Davit system and are now wondering if I shood remove the lead bars in my bilge now.

Do other 36's have lead ballast in their bilge?

In our 42, we added ballast to the bilge in the lazarette to offset 300' of 3/8" chain anchor rode in the bow. She had been sitting stern high with issues including water never completely draining via the aft scupper drains. She also has a large inverter battery bank to starboard in the engine room which gave her a slight list to starboard. Both of these issues came with the boat when we bought her. In putting in the ballast, we favored the port side to counteract the list. She now sits properly, the water drains well, the aft head door does not swing open on it's own, the transom zincs are always in the water even with empty tanks and she no longer lists. Added 1500 lbs.
